In the new translation of the First Eucharistic Prayer (Roman Canon) we hear that Jesus "took this precious chalice in his holy and venerable hands". Noble vessels are used to celebrate the Eucharist, but only a few could really be called 'precious'. The word does not make sense if it merely refers to monetary value.
